HATEM Ben Arfa is determined to etch his name in Newcastle United folklore after being inspired by Steve Harper’s testimonial.
Ben Arfa watched in awe as 50,000 fans turned out to pay tribute to not only the ex-Toon goalkeeper, but also the galaxy of former stars he’d assembled for the game.
The likes of Alan Shearer, Shay Given, Tino Asprilla and Ben Arfa’s French countryman David Ginola were among the many old players on show.
As the current darling of St James’s Park, Ben Arfa admits he wants to be remembered in the same way as the old ‘Entertainers’ side of the 1990s.
“I watched the legends play in front of 50,000 people,” he said.
“We hope we can fill the stadium out and do something similar.
“That would never happen in France for a legends game but we want to entertain the people now.
“There’s such a big culture here and we want to continue it.
“There is respect from our fans for players of the past and now we want to be remembered in the same way by entertaining the fans.
“In Newcastle there is such respect for the players.
“I was surprised at how much though.
“I’m a player now but when I’m finished I hope it will be the same.”
