FABRICIO Coloccini is out of Sunday’s game against Norwich City – but Cheik Tiote and Papiss Demba Cisse could return for Newcastle United.
Manager Alan Pardew had hoped to have his captain back to face Chris Hughton’s side.
But Coloccini – who has a hamstring problem – isn’t pencilled to return to training until next week.
Pardew, however, is hopeful Tiote (calf) and Cisse (illness) will be fit to face Norwich.
“Cheik and Papiss will train today, and Colo will train on Monday – he won’t make the Norwich game,” Pardew told the Gazette.
Pardew left a number of first-team players out of his squad for last night’s Europa League game against Martimo, among them Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye and Jonas Gutierrez.
And Pardew – whose side were held to a goalless draw at the Estadio dos Barreiros – feels his decision was fully justified given the overriding importance of the club’s Premier League form.
“I made a positive decision at the start of this tournament that I’m going to rest my big players for the Premier League games,” he said.
“If you think Dan Gosling could play a Premier League game after the meterage he has covered, you have got to be kidding me.
“He couldn’t – he couldn’t possibly do it – so it is about hopefully having a few more options for Sunday, as well as the guys who have played so well.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Vurnon Anita, who had been pencilled in to start against Maritimo, missed last night’s game after returning home to be with his partner, who went into labour.
