NEWCASTLE United suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at Craven Cottage.

Fulham came from behind to win 5-2 on what turned out to be a dismal afternoon by the River Thames.

Danny Guthrie opened the scoring with a stunning strike, and United deserved their 1-0 lead at the break, but the home side fought back strongly in the second-half, scoring four goals in a devastating 16-minute spell.

Clint Dempsey netted a hat-trick, and Danny Murphy and Bobby Zamora both netted penalties in an error-ridden 45 minutes for Alan Pardew’s side, who had been hoping to climb above fifth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table.

Hatem Ben Arfa scored a late goal, but it was scant consolation for Newcastle’s huge travelling support
