YOAN Gouffran was Newcastle United’s match-winner against Wellington Phoenix this morning.
The forward’s first-half strike gave Alan Pardew’s side a 1-0 win in the final Football United Tour 2014 game at the Westpac Stadium in front of a 30,968 crowd.
Gouffran scored with a header from Vurnon Anita cross just past the half-hour mark.
Pardew lost forward Siem de Jong – who had missed a training session with a foot problem earlier this week – to injury before the break.
Goalkeeper Rob Elliot made two good saves from Wellington’s Jeremy Brochie in the second half.
United, having used all their outfield substitutes, ended the game with 10 men after Rolando Aarons limped off the field.
Newcastle – who beat Sydney FC in their other New Zealand tour match – will now make the long journey back to Tyneside ahead of Wednesday night’s friendly against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
