JOHN Carver is adamant that he IS getting the best out of his Newcastle United players – despite a five-game losing streak.

Carver’s side take on Tottenham Hotspur at St James’s Park on Sunday looking to end a dismal run in the Premier League.

It’s a test of management how you deal with it. I think I’m getting the best out of the group of players we have.

The 50-year-old, the club’s head coach until the end of the season, has come under fire from angry fans.

But Carver – whose squad has been decimated by injuries and suspensions – feels he could not have got any more out of his players over the past few months.

“We’ve had setbacks, but you have got to deal with setbacks,” said Carver, whose team still need to secure their top-flight status for another season.

“It would be interesting to see if any manger or head coach had had this sort of situation in their career.

“It has been difficult, the facts are there. I’m not a moaner and not making excuses.

Carver, previously No2 to departed manager Alan Pardew, maintains that he is enjoying the job – despite the challenges he is facing at St James’s Park.

“I’m enjoying it,” he said. “You might think think it’s strange to say that, but the hardest thing is to pick yourself up after a defeat because you take it personally.

“But we are professionals, and we have to get on with it.

“I’m quite a positive guy inside my head, and I know I can do the job. I just need the tools.”
