JOHN Carver wants his Newcastle United players to make St James’s Park a “fortress” for the rest of the season.

Carver – who was recently confirmed as the club’s head coach until the summer – won the first game of his spell in charge last week with a 3-0 victory at Hull.

On Sunday, he will look for his first home win when Newcastle take on Stoke City, which he has described as a “huge” game.

Carver said: “We’ve had some work on the training ground this week and now want to go back to St James’s Park and make this place a fortress.

“It’s a huge game. We’re two points behind Stoke so if we win we will go above them, and that’s our aim.

“We are not relaxing. I want to get as high as I can up this division. We are here to win football matches.”
