NEWCASTLE United were outclassed by Malaga at the Veltins Arena this afternoon.
The Spanish side won the Schalke 04 Cup match 3-1.
Malaga took a 3-0 first-half lead in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, thanks to a strike from Sergei Darder and two goals from Samu Castillejo.
Substitute Gabriel Obertan for Alan Pardew’s side netted after the break.
The game saw Remy Cabella, signed from Montpellier last month, make his debut for the club.
There were 21 arrests in Dusseldorf last night according to local police after clashes between Newcastle and West Ham United fans.
And there were reports of disturbances in the away end during the Malaga game.
Newcastle, backed by several hundred supporters at the Veltins Arena, will play Schalke tomorrow (4.45pm kick-off BST).
Malaga enjoyed the better of the first half, and deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute through Darder, who beat Rob Elliot with a fierce shot from 25 yards out.
Elliot had stopped an early shot from Duda, and Darder should have done better with a header two minutes before he scored.
United struggled to carve out chances of their own, though midfielder Moussa Sissoko put one opportunity wide of Idris Kameni’s goal.
The half also saw applause in memory of Newcastle supporters Liam Sweeney and John Alder, who lost their lives last month on downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.
After taking the lead, Malaga pressed for a second goal, and it wasn’t long in coming.
Elliot stopped a shot from Roque Santa Cruz with his leg, but he couldn’t do anything to stop a far-post strike from an unmarked Castillejo, who met a right-wing cross from Jesus Gamez.
Pardew made three changes at the break.
Obertan, Rolando Aarons, Yoan Gouffran and Emmanuel Riviere replaced Cabella, Sissoko, Adam Armstrong and Ayoze Perez.
And it was Obertan gave Newcastle some hope with a 60th-minute strike. Jack Colback played a short corner to him, and the winger cut into the box and beat Kameni with a fierce right-footed shot.
Vurnon Anita and Paul Dummett were thrown on for the last 23 minutes, with Colback and Massadio Haidara leaving the field.
More substitutions followed – Mike Williamson came off the bench to make his first pre-season appearance – as the game meandered to a close.
