Steve McClaren says Newcastle United must go back to basics after dismal defeat at Upton Park saw them go bottom of the Premier League.

Two goals from Dimitri Payet gave West Ham United a 2-0 win last night.

Sunderland and Stoke City overtook Newcastle, who are without a win in five league games.

The team has also gone 402 minutes in the league without scoring a goal.

Newcastle weren’t helped by the east London traffic, having got to the stadium less than an hour before kick off.

The players had less than 10 minutes to warm up, but McClaren refused to use that as an excuse.

“We’ve got talented players out there, but we didn’t do the basics well enough,” said McClaren, whose side take on Watford at St James’s Park on Saturday.

“We had been for four games, and that had kept us in games, but we didn’t do that here.

“It’s a process, and this is normal. These sorts of nights and games are painful to go through, but sometimes you have to go through them to learn about individuals and your team.

“We have to learn and move on, and make sure we give a big reaction on Saturday.

“The players have been told it’s disappointing, but all you can do in football is dust yourself down and look forward to the challenge of a home game, and put this game and result to bed.”

Payet opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a stunning right-footed strike.

And the summer signing put the game beyond Newcastle early in the second half.

McClaren, without the suspended Aleksandar Mitrovic, doesn’t expect to have any players back from injury for the Watford game.

Defender Steven Taylor was not in the squad last night because of injury.
