MODIBO Maiga has failed his medical at Newcastle United in a blow to the club’s transfer-window plans.
The striker had been set for a £7million move to St James’s Park next month.
But Maiga failed this week’s medical, and the club have pulled the plug on his proposed move from Sochaux.
United manager Alan Pardew has been looking for a replacement for Andy Carroll since January, when he joined Liverpool in a £35million deal.
And the club will have to quickly turn their attention to alternative targets.
Maiga’s agent, Karim Aklil, has told of his “disappointment” at the breakdown of Maiga’s move to Newcastle.
Aklil said: “I’m disappointed by the turn of events - Modibo’s in perfect physical condition, and this was confirmed by specialists.
“I’m surprised by what’s happened. He remains one of the best strikers in France.”
United were frustrated in their attempts to sign Maiga in the summer, when he went on strike in a bid to force a move to the club.
