BAFETIMBI Gomis will not be joining Newcastle United today – according to the president of his current club Lyon.
The Magpies had been reportedly close to striking a deal to land the Frenchman earlier in the transfer window, but Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas has insisted there will be no late move.
Newcastle were not the only club interested in the striker, with Swansea City and clubs across Europe keen, but it now appears Gomis will run down his contract in France.
Aulas said: “We have to face facts, there isn’t an offer that Bafe has accepted despite (interest from) the English and the Turks and Lyon need a player like him.
“It was logical that Bafe would not reach the end of his contract, but if it is not possible (to extend) we have no more time to reinforce the team, so he will be our reinforcement.”
