Newcastle United’s Northern Ireland international Shane Ferguson catches eye in Stoke City defeat

The Northern Ireland international’s bright performance in the 4-0 defeat was about the only positive to come from a desperately disappointing afternoon.

Ferguson was thrown on midway through the first half after defender Jose Enrique limped off with a hamstring problem.

And the 19-year-old caught the eye, not least the skill he showed to carve out a shot on goal after beating two men on the byline in the second half.

With Enrique a doubt for the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’s Park a week on Saturday, Ferguson is on standby for his full Premier League debut.

While frustrated at the result, Ferguson still enjoyed the experience gained on his fifth appearance for the club.
