SAMMY Ameobi is hoping to shrug off illness to play for England Under-21s tonight.
And the Newcastle United youngster goes into the game with praise from the Magpies’ assistant manager John Carver ringing in his ears.
Ameobi made his Under-21 debut on Thursday night as an 11th-minute substitute against Iceland, and had been hoping to start tonight’s Euro qualifier against Belgium Under-21s.
But he sat out yesterday’s training session after complaining of feeling unwell, and boss Stuart Pearce will wait and see how he is today before naming his side.
Either way, Carver has backed the younger brother of long-serving Toon striker Shola to have a big future in the game after seeing the winger impress in cameos for Newcastle already this season.
Carver said: “He’s done really well this season, and had a good pre-season.
“He’s on the fringes of the team, and he’s worked hard for his opportunities. I think it’s great he played for England Under-21s – he deserved the opportunity.”
