FEARS ... Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew

NEWCASTLE United manager Alan Pardew’s admitted he feared the sack after headbutting David Meyler.

Pardew has been handed a seven-game suspension by the Football Association for his clash with the Hull City striker earlier this month.

Hours after the incident at the KC Stadium earlier this month, the 52-year-old was fined £100,000 and given a “formal warning” by Newcastle.

And Pardew admits it was a “relief” that club owner Mike Ashley didn’t go further in his punishment, with United having issued a statement making it clear that he wouldn’t face any further sanctions.

“Of course it was a relief,” said Pardew today.

“When you’ve made a mistake, and my mistake was in front of millions of people, you have to pay a price.

“It was a hefty price to pay. Mike acted swiftly, and I accepted that.

“We go forward, and I have to say, in this period, the backing I’ve had from the club in particular has been really important to me, because it’s been difficult.”
