INTER Milan’s Davide Santon has emerged as a Newcastle United target.
The club is understood to be pursuing the full-back after talks over a move for PSV Eindhoven’s Erik Pieters hit a hitch.
Newcastle had hoped to conclude a deal for Pieters over the weekend.
But the 23-year-old lined up for PSV in their 6-1 win against Excelsior yesterday, and 20-year-old Santon now appears to be the focus of the club’s efforts.
Manager Alan Pardew is also chasing a striker, but time is running out with the transfer window closing at 5pm on Wednesday.
Pardew hinted after yesterday’s 2-1 win over Fulham that there had been a late change of targets in his search for a left-back, but he wouldn’t be drawn on the names of those players the club is in talks over signing.
Italy international Santon, 20, is an attacking full-back who can play on both sides.
“It’s very important that we get at least two players in this week,” Pardew said.
“We know that, and my job is to push for them. The financial side of things is something I don’t do.
“(Managing director) Derek Llambias and (football secretary) Lee Charnley are frustrated – I know they are.
“We were very close to a deal before the game, but that has gone away, or is on ice for a while. They need to get them over the line, they know that.”
