NEWCASTLE Unied’s Rob Elliot has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for next month’s friendly against Serbia.

The goalkeeper was brought into the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Kazakhstan late last year, but he didn’t make an appearance.

However, the 27-year-old could be handed his debut against Serbia in Dublin on March 5.

There was no place in Martin O’Neill’s squad for former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given, whose successful spell on loan at Middlesbrough from Aston Villa ends this weekend.
