NEWCASTLE United are ready to kill off Liverpool’s title challenge tomorrow.
That’s the rallying cry from midfielder Vurnon Anita, who feels United can “spoil” any potential party at Anfield.
Liverpool – aiming for their first league title in 24 years – are two points off the summit heading into the final round of fixtures.
Their hopes of winning their first championship of the Premier League era appear slim following their collapse at Crystal Palace on Monday, when they let a 3-0 lead slip to draw 3-3.
Manchester City capitalised on that to leapfrog them into top spot with a 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday, and realistically need just a point against West Ham United on Sunday to seal their second title in three years, with their goal difference significantly superior to Liverpool’s.
However, the Reds remain on their tails, and will feel confident of beating Newcastle, who have lost six of their last seven league games.
Alan Pardew’s side did get a much-needed win on the board against Cardiff City on Saturday, though, and go to Anfield with the pressure off and their top-half finish assured.
Anita is confident United can return from Merseyside having scuppered any lingering title hopes for Brendan Rodgers’s side, and insists motivation will not be a problem for the Magpies.
The Dutchman said: “It’s an important game for us and the whole competition.
“It’s a big game, and we want to end the season well, so it’s important for us.
“The chance to spoil their party is the big thing.
“If they are going to be champions, we don’t want them to do it by beating us.
“We want to give everything to spoil the party.”
