Steve McClaren felt his Newcastle United players showed “courage” in their pre-season defeat to Club Atlas.

McClaren’s side were beaten 2-1 at Miller Park, Milwaukee, in the early hours of this morning.

Gonzalo Ruben Bergessio took advantage of some poor defending put Club Atlas 2-0 ahead in the first half, but Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko pulled a goal back before the break.

And a spirited United went on to dominate a keenly-contested second half which saw an attempt from Papiss Demba Cisse stopped on the line.

Newcastle showed more aggression after the break – and physically matched their Mexican opposition – and head coach McClaren was heartened by the second-half display.

Asked about the performance, McClaren said: “It’s rusty.

“We’ve asked them to do things that are quite new to them, but credit to them, to do that takes courage, and they had that.

“They carried on, and in the end we dominated the game.”

A crowd of 21,256, including hundreds of Newcastle fans, watched the game at the home of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team.

“I thought it was a good game,” added McClaren. “I thought the crowd were tremendous.

“It was a good advert, not just for Mexican football, but the Premier League.”
