Why John Carver is ‘worried’ about Newcastle

John Carver says he’s “worried” about Newcastle United.

The club is bottom of the Premier League with five games played.

Steve McClaren’s side were beaten 2-0 by West Ham United at Upton Park on Monday night.

And Carver – who was the club’s interim head coach in the second half of last season as it fought relegation – is concerned about its plight just months after his departure.

Defender Daryl Janmaat was Newcastle’s best attacking player in east London.

And Carver told beIN Sports: “We talk about Daryl Janmaat getting three shots, but on the other side, (Massadio) Haidara was quite progressive.

“Your two most progressive players in the team were your full-backs – that has to be a concern. It has to be a worry.”

McClaren has been attempted to implement a new style of football since succeeding Carver in the summer.

Carver said: “They have to start and get players running beyond.

“When you play this Tiki-taka football – where you keep the ball, you keep the ball – it is dead easy for West Ham just to get back in that solid shape.”
