Danny Guthrie recalls Ewood grit ahead of return to Blackburn

NEWCASTLE United showed character on their last visit to Blackburn Rovers – and Alan Pardew’s players will need more grit tonight.
Danny Guthrie sparked a dramatic injury-time comeback with a 93rd-minute goal in October’s Carling Cup tie between the two sides at Ewood Park.
Yohan Cabaye’s stunning free-kick took the game into extra time, where Newcastle were eventually beaten 4-3 by a late Gael Givet goal.
United’s return to Lancashire in the Premier League comes on the back of another cup defeat, this time to Brighton, and Guthrie and his team-mates are looking to put that result behind them and maintain their challenge for a European place.
“The last league game was a strange one, it was great in the first half, and a very poor second half,” said Guthrie.
“It’s the fourth time we’ve played them this season and we haven’t got a bad record against them.
“It was a strange game at Blackburn – we didn’t defend set-pieces very well, and got caught out.
“We were still proud of ourselves that night, because we looked dead and buried at 2-0 down. We showed the character to come back and force the game into extra-time
“We go there feeling we can win. We’re very confident, even though we’re coming into it on the back of a defeat at Brighton.
“We are so disappointed by what happened at Brighton, we just didn’t take our chances on the night and got stuck right at the end.”
