SHOLA Ameobi says Newcastle United’s season is far from over – despite the club’s disappointing FA Cup exit.

Ameobi captained Alan Pardew’s side in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Brighton.

Buoyed by their Premier League form, Pardew’s players – and the club’s fans – had high hopes of a long run in the competition this season.

But their involvement was ended by a goal from boyhood United fan Will Buckley at the Amex Stadium, whose 76th-minute goal decided a scrappy contest in which both teams struggled to create chances.

And the focus now solely on a promising league campaign which could yet yield a European place.

Newcastle are sixth in the division, level on points with fifth-placed Arsenal, and Blackburn Rovers are next up at Ewood Park on Wednesday night

“This isn’t our season over, not by any stretch of the imagination,” Ameobi told SportMail.

“We’ve got to stay positive, even though we’re bitterly disappointed. We’ve go to get over this and move on.”

Read more of Shola Ameobi’s thoughts, plus more reaction to Newcastle’s FA Cup exit, in today’s Sportmail.
