Simpson looks to keep building Euro points at Newcastle
ON THE BALL: Danny Simpson
DANNY Simpson says Newcastle will “quietly” go about their unexpected bid for European adventures next season.
With 14 games of the Premier League season left, his fifth-placed team are well-placed in the battle for the European places.
And Newcastle’s fans are dreaming of a return to the continent almost six years after the club last bowed out of the UEFA Cup in Dutch footballing outpost Alkmaar.
However, full-back Danny Simpson is not about to make any bold statements about where the club will finish the campaign, with United’s players – who take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane this evening – preferring their feet to do the talking.
“Everyone was saying we were relegation contenders at the start of the season,” Simpson said.
“To be in the position we’re in with 14 games to go is brilliant, but we’ve still got a long way to go.
“We’ve got a lot of good home games left over the next 14 games and we’ve got to look to take maximum points from them and pick up points away from home.
“We’ll let the so-called top six battle it out.
“The pressure’s on them to get into the top six or top four. We’ll just go about our business quietly and keep picking up points.”
