Sunderland's escape has given Jack Colback '˜belief' that Newcastle United can beat drop

Colback scored the club’s second goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

And the midfielder is hoping the point second-bottom Newcastle took home will prove to be an important one.

Rafa Benitez believes his team need to win their final three games to have a chance of staying in the Premier League, and Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace are next up at St James’s Park on Saturday.

Colback has battled relegation on both sides of the Tyne-Wear divide.

The 26-year-old was in the Sunderland which pulled off a great escape two years ago.

Asked about his experiences with his former club, Colback said: “It’s experiences I’d rather do without.

“Hopefully, I can help with that. I was probably in a worse situation with Sunderland few years ago and we managed to get out of it.

“All you can really do is keep believing. We’ve got a huge game against Crystal Palace.

“Our home form’s been decent, so we’ve got to make sure we get the three points.”

Colback and his team-mates were given a standing ovation by United’s 2,650-strong travelling support at Anfield in recognition for their spirited comeback against Jurgen Klopp’s in-form side.

“They’re sticking with us,” said Colback. “We’ve got to try to repay them with points and good performances.”

Newcastle had been second-best before the break, but they were transformed after a half-time talk from former Liverpool manager Benitez.

“He said we had to keep believing and do what we said beforehand,” said Colback.

Papiss Cisse pulled a goal back three minutes into the second half, and Colback connected with a Vurnon Anita cross in the 66th minute to spark wild celebrations in the away end.

“I saw the space on the edge of the box when the ball came down the right,” he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

“I took a gamble. They saw to fall for you at the right time at times. Luckily it did.

“I managed to get a good connection. It took a little nick and went in. It could be a good point.”
