Will Toon Sho star the door?

SHOLA Ameobi is in the dark over efforts by Newcastle United to sell him just six months after he signed a new contract at St James's Park.

Long-serving Ameobi had come in from the cold under Joe Kinnear last season to earn a three-year deal, though he made just one start under Alan Shearer, his former strike partner.

However, almost a year since he failed a medical at Ipswich Town, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Kevin Keegan, the striker again finds himself being pushed towards the exit door.

Newcastle's hierarchy have given agency First Artists permission to find buyers for a number of the club's first-team squad, including Ameobi, as they look to slash a crippling 74m wage bill which is unsustainable in the wake of relegation to the Championship.

However, the player and his agent, Steven Denos, are in the dark over the move, and Ameobi will report back for pre-season training on July 1 in readiness for a TENTH first-team campaign at United.

Asked about the list of players put up for sale, Denos told SportMail: "It's been mentioned to me, but I've not seen it.

"I've not discussed it with Shola, and, to be perfectly honest, I don't know what's happening at Newcastle."

Ameobi – who made his Newcastle debut almost nine years ago – struck four goals last season, taking his tally for the club to 50.
