Cats boss backs ex-Newcastle defender

STEVE Bruce has defended his decision to bring Titus Bramble to Sunderland by saying: "The easiest thing to do would have been not to sign him!"

The defender flew out yesterday to link-up with his prospective new team-mates on the Algarve.

The formalities of the deal – understood to be a fee of around 1million, rising to 3m with potential add-ons – are expected to be concluded today on what is a somewhat controversial move.

Mention the centre-half's name and most supporters would think of either his Newcastle days when he became a figure of fun or some of the high-profile ricks he has made over the years through lapses of concentrations.

But Bruce, who remains in the market for another centre-half, believes Bramble could be a major asset.

"Look, I thought long and hard about signing him," said Bruce.

"Long and hard because I knew it might be a difficult one for Sunderland fans and for him.

"But the great thing is that the lad's got plenty of bottle – he wanted to come here, he wanted to play for me and Sunderland.

"And I feel sure that Sunderland fans will recognise that and give him a fair crack of the whip.

"At the end of the day, Sunderland fans want the same as me and the same as Titus Bramble – which is success for this club. And if Titus shows – as I think he will – that he can make us better, then I don't think supporters will have a problem accepting him."
