DANNY Welbeck has returned to Manchester United – a move expected to signal the end of his season-long loan to Sunderland.

The 20-year-old was ordered back to Old Trafford to undergo treatment on the hamstring strain aggravated in the Black Cats’ win over Wigan at the weekend.

But Steve Bruce has not abandoned all hope the young England striker could return to play in the club’s final game of the season, when the Black Cats travel to West Ham looking for their first win on the last day of a Premier League campaign.

The Sunderland manager said: “Danny has gone back to Man U because they want to assess him and he won’t come back to us unless they can get it 100 per cent right – say, in time for the last game of the season against West Ham.
