PAOLO DI CANIO claims Sunderland cannot take a chance on signing Gino Peruzzi after discovering problems during the Argentine defender’s medical, reports Chris Young from Hong Kong.

Argentine club Velez Sarsfeld released a statement yesterday insisting that Peruzzi’s protracted move to the Stadium of Light was still on track, despite Sunderland’s initial medical showing lasting damage from a ligament injury sustained last season.

Velez said Peruzzi had undergone a second medical in Italy and was expected to finalise his move to Wearside next week after Sunderland return from their pre-season tour of Hong Kong.

But Di Canio today scotched that hope, by declaring there is “no chance” that Peruzzi will join Sunderland, with the Black Cats unable to task a risk on the 22-year-old’s fitness.

“At the moment, there is no chance for Gino Peruzzi to join us,” said the Sunderland head coach.

“My club is not a club that can sign players with some problems.

“We are not Manchester City who can think about buying a talented player with an injury and wait for him.

“We are not very late (in the transfer window) but I would like a player ready to join the rest of the group, because the process of integration is not just physical.

“They have to understand how we play which is not easy.”

Peruzzi’s transfer is the second full-back deal to fall through for Sunderland this summer after left-back Benjamin Mendy opted to join Marseille over the Black Cats.

With Phil Bardsley out of the first-team picture and expected to join Fulham, Sunderland remain without a specialist full-back on the books, with midfielders Jack Colback and Craig Gardner expected to occupy the two roles in tomorrow’s Barclays Asia Trophy clash against Tottenham.
