FIORENTINA are unlikely to make a move for Sunderland flop Modibo Diakite, unless the Black Cats resurrect a deal for Marcos Alonso.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet revealed earlier this week that the Wearsiders were now unlikely to sign former loanee Alonso after the capture of fellow left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

The Black Cats have been looking to sign Alonso throughout the summer after his successful spell during the second half of last season at the Stadium of Light and have been keen to include Diakite in a part-exchange deal after the centre-half moved the other way on loan in January.

But with Fiorentina effectively pricing Alonso out of a move, Sunderland turned instead to van Aanholt to fill the left-back void and the Black Cats are instead now looking for a more versatile full-back to boost their defensive options.

Sunderland are keen to offload Diakite after the 27-year-old started just seven games last season following his arrival from Serie A outfit Lazio.

But Fiorentina are not expected to make a separate move for Diakite, with hopes of a swap deal involving Alonso looking to be over.

Fiorentina are on the verge of signing Argentine international defender Jose Maria Basanta and sources in Italy have indicated that they will not be in the market for another centre-half.

While Sunderland’s pursuit of Alonso is unlikely to be resurrected, the Black Cats are still hopeful of re-signing fellow loanees Fabio Borini and Santiago Vergini.

The latter is understood to be the closest among Sunderland’s targets to arriving at the Stadium of Light, although the Black Cats are thought to have put in bids for several players.

Meanwhile, Wolves boss Kenny Jackett has confirmed that out-of-contract Crewe striker Max Clayton, who spent the first three weeks of pre-season training with Sunderland, is on trial at Molineux.

“We’re going to look at him for a week and see if we like him and he likes us,” said Jackett.
