Dick Advocaat has total faith that Sunderland will still beat the drop after rejecting talk that the Black Cats fluffed their lines against Leicester.

Sunderland face the prospect of having to pick up a point from trips to Premier League champions Chelsea and third placed Arsenal after being held to a goalless draw against the now-safe Foxes.

But we will go on until the end and we have to do what we have to do to get that point

Third-bottom Hull would still need to beat Manchester United, even if Sunderland lose both games, while Newcastle may have to triumph over West Ham too, with the Black Cats boasting a superior goal difference of five.

But a victory against Leicester would have made all of Sunderland’s relegation worries redundant.

However, Sunderland head coach Advocaat was not too dismayed by the draw against Leicester, particularly as the gap with the bottom three extended to three points. Advocaat said: “It’s unfair against Leicester to say it was a missed opportunity.

“They’ve only lost one in the last eight games, which says everything about the way they play and their system.

“We’ve only lost one out of six too.

“Normally, if you have 37 points, you’re safe.

“But we will go on until the end and we have to do what we have to do to get that point.

“The other teams have to do what they have to do too, and win their games.

“We will stay up, I have no doubts about that.

“If one team deserved to win, it was Sunderland.

“Our approach was totally different to Leicester’s.

“But Leicester are a good side, with good strikers up front and we worked very hard, our organisation was excellent.”
