Could Sunderland make a move for Jordan Rhodes? Will there be more arrivals before the season opener at Leicester City?
Sunderland reporter Chris Young answered all your questions ahead of the new campaign via our live Q&A.
We were inundated with questions and you can read the full Q&A by clicking here.
Here is a selection of the best questions to Chris:
What did you make of the Doncaster defeat?
CY: It was an improvement from the three games in North America (which probably says a lot about the matches on the other side of the Atlantic). But despite the scoreline, I think there were some positives - chiefly Jeremain Lens, who was superb. On first sight, he looks to be just what Sunderland needed this summer. They clearly need a couple more attack-minded signings though.
Callum Mackay tweeted: Why does Dick Advocaat not play Jermain Defoe centrally?
CY: I agree Callum that you have to play Defoe centrally. There’s no point playing him out wide. I think he’s been used in pre-season there just to get some minutes and because of the imbalance in the squad. The problem comes though if Dick Advocaat wants to play 4-3-3, then Defoe has to be the central striker, unless he’s used slightly deeper.
Steven Ashett @StevenAshett asked: with the second (joint) worse goal scoring record in the Premier League last season why only one attacker in so far?
CY: I think everyone can see the need for more attack-minded recruits, but it will not have gone unnoticed by Dick. They clearly need a couple more, but the club are making enquiries for strikers and midfielders. The big question mark heading into the season though is who is going to score the goals.
Dave, via Twitter, asked: Why do #SAFC seem to be the only team restricted by the FA Financial Fair Play rule?
CY: FFP is something that frustrates supporters and I understand why when a lot of clubs seem to just ignore it. I do think the club need to be more open and pro-active in explaining how the rules and regulations of FFP work, because it’s not straightforward. But Short is clearly keen to abide by it after he proposed the wage restrictions stemming from the previous TV deal.
David Metcalfe asked whether the club was any further forward in offloading any of the current squad? Mannone or Bridcutt?
CY: I’ve just posted a link about Mavrias. I understand Panathinaikos have put their interest on hold until later in the window, so that one looks like dragging on. Not expecting any imminent departures. There have been loan enquiries for Bridcutt / Buckley, but SAFC want to sell them both if possible.
We have a few questions in regarding the future of Fabio Borini, over to you Chris:
CY: Despite last summer’s saga, it’s not one I’d completely rule out if Liverpool are letting him go cheaply. He knows Congerton well from their time together at Chelsea. And despite Poyet keeping Sunderland’s pursuit dragging on last summer, Borini was straight with Congerton from the start.
Joe Smith- all the way from Florida, USA - asked: Do you think we’ll see any new arrivals before Leicester Chris? We still seem alarmingly short on quality.
CY: No imminent new arrivals on the horizon Joe, so not convinced there’ll be anyone else in before Leicester. The end of the window is a different matter though.
Tony H tweeted: Jordan Rhodes of Blackburn? Would he be a fit for SAFC?
CY: I’m not convinced by Rhodes. He’s been scoring goals for years in the Championship, but no Premier League sides have taken a chance on him. That tells you something.
