JACK RODWELL returned to the Sunderland starting line-up after a five-game absence for the Black Cats’ trip to his former club Manchester City.

Rodwell wasn’t even included in the squad for last weekend’s stalemate at Aston Villa, but the £10million summer signing was handed the defensive midfield role, with Lee Cattermole ruled out through injury and Liam Bridcutt still recovering from concussion.

It was one of only two changes to the Sunderland side, with Will Buckley replacing Steven Fletcher - a switch which saw Connor Wickham move into a central role.

Seb Larsson was passed fit after suffering an ankle problem at Villa.

England stopper Joe Hart was only on the bench for Man City, who included Yaya Toure after he had been an injury doubt.

MANCHESTER CITY: Caballero, Zabaleta, Mangala, Demichelis, Clichy, Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, Nasri, Silva, Navas, Jovetic. Subs: Hart, Kolarov, Milner, Sagna, Lampard, Sinclair, Boyata

SUNDERLAND: Pantilimon, Vergini, Jones, Brown, O’Shea, Rodwell, Larsson, Gomez, Johnson, Buckley, Wickham. Subs: Fletcher, Cabral, Altidore, Alvarez, Coates, Giaccherini, Mannone.
