JI Dong-won has become Sunderland’s third summer signing in the space of 24 hours and admits he is relishing the opportunity now the deal is finally done.
PSV Eindhoven and Schalke 04 were also after the 20-year-old striker’s signature and the interest of the big Dutch and German clubs put the move to the Stadium of Light in the balance for a few days.
But Sunderland quickly upped their bid in order to secure one of the hottest properties in Asia and the South Korean will now be playing his football in the English Premier League next season.
He said: “I had the impression that Sunderland really wanted me.
“I know there will be stiff competition for playing time but my goal is to become the player that the team wants me to be in six months.
“I am also looking forward to playing against Park Ji-sung and Lee Chung-yong, whom I both admire.”
Ji’s club Chunnam Dragons officially confirmed the move in a statement which read: “Ji Dong-won is joining Sunderland on a three-year contract.
“The terms negotiated by the two clubs regarding transfer fee and salary will not be released publicly.
