SUNDERLAND defender John Egan has joined League Two Southend United on a month’s loan.
Academy product Egan returned to action in November after spending almost 12 months on the sidelines with a horrific double broken leg, suffered during a loan spell at Bradford City.
The centre-half has subsequently re-established himself as a regular in Kevin Ball’s development squad, who are lying in third spot in the Under-21 Premier League.
But Sunderland continue to be pro-active in allowing their youngsters to gain vital experience in the Football League and the 21-year-old has joined the Shrimpers in time for the weekend’s clash against Wycombe.
Southend’s Sunderland-supporting boss Phil Brown said: “John is the type of defender I like to have in my side and I’m sure he’ll fit straight in.
“He’s a no-nonsense type of defender but at the same time he can get the ball down and play out from the back.”
