SOUTH AMERICAN pair Ricky Alvarez and Sebastian Coates are both expected to feature in tomorrow’s Capital One Cup third round clash against Stoke City.
But neither Steven Fletcher or Emanuele Giaccherini are likely to be risked in the Stadium of Light encounter, although the duo are only short-term absentees.
Alvarez missed Sunderland’s stalemate at Burnley on Saturday with a knock sustained in training, but is now fit and should start against the Potters.
So too should Uruguay international Coates, with the on-loan Liverpool defender in line to make his Sunderland debut - probably at the expense of Wes Brown.
But Fletcher, who missed the Burnley game with a calf strain, and Giaccherini, who came off at Turf Moor with an ankle problem, are both expected to watch the game from the stands.
The pair could be available for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Swansea though.
Sunderland boss Gus Poyet said today: “Ricky is fit. Fletcher is not unfortunately.
“I would like to say he’s probably going to be fit for the weekend.
“Ricky is in the squad and Coates is in the squad.
“We’ve got a decent group, so we should put a very strong team out which is important, with a few changes that are needed.
“I’m just looking forward to playing the game, performing and winning of course.”
