Sunderland’s pursuit of Adnan Januzaj looks set to step up a gear as Manchester United close in on the signing of Barcelona star Pedro.

The Spanish World Cup winner’s future is “soon” to be resolved, according to his manager Luis Enrique.

And Manchester United look set to win the race for his signature - despite late interest from rivals Manchester City - which would free Januzaj to leave on a season-long loan deal.

The Echo exclusively revealed last week that Sunderland were in talks over a season-long loan for Januzaj, who has seen his progress stall at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal.

It is thought that they are at the front of the queue to take Januzaj on loan, despite interest from Everton.

Those discussions have personally involved Dick Advocaat and fellow Dutchman van Gaal, it is understood, with the two veterans on excellent terms after decades together in management.

Barcelona boss Enrique hinted Pedro’s future would be sorted out soon when he was asked before the club’s Super Cup final clash with Sevilla in Tbilisi.

Enrique said: “Pedro’s future will be resolved shortly because there is not long to go until the transfer market closes.”

United are keen to rubber-stamp Pedro’s proposed £20million move from Barcelona before they sanction Januzaj’s departure.
