THE battle for a top 10 finish in the Premier League is getting every bit as intense as the relegation battle just below it, concedes Steve Bruce.

The Sunderland boss has made it clear over recent days that the club’s intention in the league this season was always simply to finish in the top half of the division.

It would be the first time Sunderland have done so since Peter Reid’s side finished seventh in consecutive seasons in the 1999/00 and 2000/01 campaigns.

It would represent progress after the Black Cats’ 13th place finish in Bruce’s first season in charge, which was in itself an improvement on the 15th place finish the season before that.
