SUNDERLAND have netted a hat-trick of own goals after Southampton’s eighth in last weekend’s rout was credited to Black Cats defender Patrick van Aanholt.
The Premier League’s Dubious Goals Panel has decided that the strike originally credited to Saints substitute Sadio Mane will now go down as a van Aanholt own goal.
It gives Sunderland a tally of three own goals in the 8-0 drubbing after Santiago Vergini and Liam Bridcutt also put the ball into their own net.
It is the second time in the Premier League that Sunderland have had the dubious honour of scoring three own goals in one game.
In February 2003, Stephen Wright scored at the wrong end before Michael Proctor twice put the ball into his own net during a 3-1 defeat to Charlton.
