SUMMER signings Craig Gardner and Ji Dong-won scored their first goals for Sunderland on a night of pluses for the Black Cats.
Those goals meant that not only have all four of Sunderland’s strikers scored in pre-season but that the man charged with getting goals regularly from the middle of the park next season has also got off the mark.
Central midfielder Gardner’s goal was the highlight of the match - an absolute lightning bolt of a free-kick five minutes before half-time which left keeper Sam Russell with no chance.
It was Sunderland’s second goal of the match, adding to Jordan Cook’s classy 26th minute finish and it effectively ended the game as a genuine contest.
Blue Square Premier league side Darlington gave it a go at the Arena, backed by a small but enthusiastic support which was matched by Sunderland’s travelling support.
But they were outclassed by a Sunderland side which had too much for them.
