EMANUELE GIACCHERINI will be assessed today after limping off in Sunderland’s stalemate at Burnley.
Giaccherini collided with ex-Middlesbrough striker Lukas Jutkiewicz midway through the second half at Turf Moor yesterday and after continuing for a few minutes, was replaced by Will Buckley.
Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was pleased with Giaccherini’s contribution in his first start of the campaign, but was concerned by the injury to the Italian international.
Poyet said: “Giaccherini had plenty of energy, going between the lines and I think he was one of our best players.
“That was the idea of playing him; to create that little bit more. He was thereabouts, so it’s not bad from him.
“Unfortunately, he took a big knock which we need to check today.”
Sunderland were also without the services of Ricky Alvarez and Steven Fletcher in the 0-0 draw with the Clarets.
Alvarez, who had started the previous weekend’s draw against Spurs, was ruled out through a knock sustained in training after being worked hard last week.
And Fletcher was injured on Friday, with out-of-favour Danny Graham taking the vacant place on the bench at Turf Moor.
“He (Fletcher) pulled out of training on Friday with a calf problem,” added Poyet.
