Sunderland to host Oxford or Barrow in FA Cup

SUNDERLAND host Oxford United or Barrow in the FA Cup third round on the weekend of January 2/3.

The Black Cats last played Oxford at home in September, 1998, crushing the visitors 7-0 in one of the Stadium of Light's most memorable games – Alex Rae, Michael Bridges and Danny Dichio scoring two each, with Michael Gray also on the scoresheet.

But the Wearsiders have never played Barrow competitively and the Cumbrians – who drew 1-1 with fellow Blue Square Premier outfit Oxford in Saturday's second round tie, with the replay a week tomorrow – could set up a second successive third-round visit to the North East after going down 2-1 at Middlesbrough last season.

Sunderland and Oxford last met in the FA Cup in 1992, when the Rokermen went all the way to the final. Goals from John Byrne, Paul Hardyman and Brian Atkinson sent caretaker-boss Malcolm Crosby's men into the fifth round with a 3-2 win at the Manor Ground.

Newcastle face a long trip to Plymouth in an all-Championship tie, while Middlesbrough are at home to Mark Hughes' faltering Manchester City side.

West Ham will face Arsenal in one of three all-Premier League fixtures. The other two top-flight affairs see Aston Villa host Blackburn and Hull travel to Wigan.

The 2008/09 runners-up Everton, meanwhile, welcome Coca-Cola League One side Carlisle to Goodison Park.

Kettering player-manager Lee Harper vowed that he and his team-mates would give it their "best shot" after they were offered a potential third-round tie at Manchester United.

The Blue Square Premier side must knock out League One leaders Leeds first, after the two teams drew 1-1 at Rockingham Road yesterday.

Blue Square Premier high-flyers York have Premier League opposition – they visit Stoke.
