SUNDERLAND will look to do their summer transfer business quickly, predicts the club’s first team coach Charlie Oatway.
Gus Poyet is currently in the process of speaking to players who are out of contract at the club, now that the Black Cats’ place in the Premier League has been secured for another season.
But once those talks are concluded over the next few days, attention will switch to player recruitment and Oatway says Sunderland fans should not be surprised if they don’t have to wait too long for new faces.
“I know Gus and I know how he works,” the 40-year-old said. “And if at all possible he likes to get players in as quickly as possible in the summer.
“Pre-season is a big time for most managers but especially, I think, for Gus and he’s always really keen to have as much of the squad together as he can for when we come back.
“He likes to have that five or six weeks to work with them before the season starts, he’ll go through every drill going, so the more of the squad we have together when we begin, the better.
“So, yeah, ideally he’s going to want to bring players in soon.”
Oatway was talking to the media yesterday at the Academy of Light because Gus Poyet was absorbed with a host of administrative duties, including talking to a string of players about their futures at the club.
The likelihood is that several of the players who helped Poyet achieve a ‘miracle’ will not be at the club next season.
But Oatway is unsentimental about inevitable change.
“It’s football isn’t it?” he said. “You don’t keep players at a club if they’re not going to play regularly, if they’re not part of your future plans.
“And if you are a player with anything about you, you don’t want to spend your time at a club where you won’t be involved.
“It’s just a necessary part of the game and we’re looking to sort it out quickly because players have families and deserve to know where they stand as quickly as they can.
“The players have been fantastic for us, they have done themselves and the football club proud and it is good for them too that they have that on their CV.”
