IF Sunderland are to prosper at Anfield, they have to play the “perfect game”, says Gus Poyet.
They will also need to contain one of the world’s best players in Luis Suarez.
Poyet was speaking ahead of the game against Liverpool this Wednesday night in which Sunderland will hope to put behind them the disappointment of the Norwich City defeat at the weekend.
“It is going to be tough,” for us said the Uruguayan.
“We need to know when to press, when to drop, when to speed up, when to slow down, when to take our chances.
“We need to play the perfect game.
“Against Norwich we lacked fight, defending everything.
“And whatever is needed we need to do it now because there’s nothing we can think of now but staying in the Premier League.
“Anfield’s a great stadium and normally the pitch is great, the atmosphere is great but we neeed to have the character to cope.
“We have to cope as individuals and as a team.
“I think it’s a great chance to do something different, something unexpected from us and look to challenge Liverpool.”
Title-chasing Liverpool are set to feature super-prolific duo Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge up front.
And Poyet says those two are the obvious threat in the coming clash.
“Last year Liverpool were playing attractive football without winning games.
“But this year they might not have been playing so well but they have won games because they have two strikers who are always scoring goals.
“That’s something we would like!
“If they lose Luiz Suarez and Daniel Sturridge against us they will not win the league.
“With them playing every game between now and the end of the season, they have a good chance.
“I saw Luiz when he was younger and he had great promise but now can compare him with the top players in the world.”
