Jeremain Lens was handed only his second Premier League start under Sam Allardyce, for Sunderland's crunch relegation clash at Swansea.

Lens - who impressed in last weekend's FA Cup third round defeat at Arsenal - retained his place in the starting XI, with Adam Johnson also included after the ex-Manchester City man took the place of Duncan Watmore out wide.

John O'Shea was passed fit after a scare over a calf injury, with the Sunderland captain partnering ex-Manchester United team-mate Wes Brown in defence.

Vito Mannone returned in goal, with fellow stopper Jordan Pickford preferred on the bench to Costel Pantilimon.

Swansea: Fabianski, Naughton, Fernandez, Williams, Taylor, Britton, Ki, Barrow, Sigurdsson, Routledge, Ayew. Subs: Nordfeldt, Rangel, Amat, Cork, Montero, Emnes, Gomis.
