LOCAL darts players are to get the chance to have a crack at two World Championship hopefuls.

Paul Jennings and Dave “the Badger” Prins are both in the line-up for the Engineers Darts Open in Hartlepool on Bank Holiday Monday, January 2.

Jennings and Prins will be in action at the Engineers Social Club, Raby Road, just days before the start of the Lakeside World Championship at Frimley Green, Surrey, on Saturday, January 7.

The Engineers Darts Open, organised by local darts player Claire Stainsby, will be the final warm-up for the duo ahead of the BBC and ESPN-televised worlds.

Headland thrower Jennings faces tough Yorkshire opposition in Garry Thompson at the Lakeside, while Peterlee left-hander Prins meets 10th-seed Willy van der Wiel, from the Netherlands.

Both players will want a good tune up for the worlds and some keen local competition

should keep them on their toes.

“It’s nice to have Paul and Dave playing,” said Claire.

“But we’d love to see more of the local players to come have a go at the tournament which has three categories.

“It’s a hotbed for darts around here and we’d urge all local league players to turn up, especially ladies, as only 10 turned up to the last one.”

Final prize money will be calculated on the day after all the entries are taken.

But the men’s competition will have £250 added to prize fund, with £50 added to the ladies cup and the U21 youth section.

Doors open at 10am on Monday at the Engineers Social Club with registration closing at 11.30am.

Entry for mens/ladies events will be £6 with a £4 fee for the youth tournament.
