LUKE Brightman spun and rotated himself to take silver medal at a recent national gymnastics tournament.
Luke, who attends the town’s Manor College of Technology, is a member of the Hartlepool Gymnastics Club.
The 12-year-old transferred his techniques honed at the club’s Lynn Street South training base onto the competition mat when he performed in the National Development Plan for British Gymnastics Tumbling in Fenton Manor, Stoke-on-Trent.
His routine entailed whips, somersaults and multiple flips, all matching together in a flawless sequence to earn second place.
Two years ago Luke was national champion but rule amendments in line with the Olympic regulations have toughened up the routine.
Nevertheless, his achievement is still impressive.
His coach Shelley Taylor said: “Luke worked very hard to get his silver medal.
“He’s a brilliant gymnast and put in a tremendous amount of effort.
“He battled through injury to perform and is now taking some time off to repair – his commitment is excellent.”
Shelley added of Luke’s potential: “I’d like to think that Luke can progress further.
“Enjoyment comes first but Luke can definitely develop into a top gymnast.
“He’s got two more national events left this year where he can pick up more medals.”
