DOUBLE Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington is adamant domestic rivalry will translate into medal success for Hartlepool swimmer Jemma Lowe at the Olympics this summer, writes Tom Reynolds.
Lowe made her Olympic debut at the Beijing Games in 2008, finishing a best of sixth in the 100m butterfly final while British team-mate Fran Halsall failed to make it out of the heats.
Since then Lowe has developed a fierce but friendly rivalry with Ellen Gandy, something that really kicked in at the European Championships in 2010 where her team-mate won 200m butterfly bronze.
“Both Jemma and Ellen can definitely be challenging for medals in London,” said Adlington – who beat off competition from fellow Brit Jo Jackson to win Olympic 400m freestyle gold in Beijing in 2008.
“They have both got such nice butterfly techniques and they are always up there. It would be so great to see them both in the medals.”
