JEMMA Lowe has missed out on the World Championship 100 metres butterfly final in Barcelona.

Lowe was the first Briton to dive into the pool on the first day of the swimming events at the Palau Sant Jordi and got off to a great start.

The Hartlepool swimmer, a “veteran” of countless World, Olympic, European and Commonwealth competitions was selected for the 2013 games in both the 100 and 200 metre butterfly events.

And despite her favoured event traditionally being the 200, Lowe looked good this morning, qualifying ninth fastest for the semis in 58.38 seconds.

But there was disappointment in Barcelona this evening when she was just edged out of the final line-up.

Lowe finished fifth in 58.46secs in her semi-final, American swimmer Claire Donahue’s 58.44 claiming the last slot in Tuesday’s final by just two one-hundredths of a second.

J Lo though has a chance of going for glory in the 200 metres butterfly with the heats getting under ay on Wednesday.
