JEMMA Lowe missed out on the medals in the European Championship 100 metre butterfly final.

The Hartlepool swimmer finished sixth in a Scaninavian-dominated showpiece in Berlin.

Lowe clocked 58.48 seconds but finished a couple of seconds behind the top two as Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen won in a blistering 56.51 – just one hundredth of a second ahead of Sarah Sjoestroem, from Sweden.

Such was the speed of the star duo that third-placed Ilaria Bianchi, from Italy, was over a second behind in 57.71.

Inge Dekker, from the Netherlands, missed out on bronze by one hundredth of a second with Italy’s Elena di Liddo (Ita) fifth in 58.27.

J Lo was sixth, ahead of Alexandra Wenk, of Germany (58.59) and Slovakia’s Katarina Listopadova.

Lowe will not be too downheartened after improving on her times from the Commonwealth Games and she still has the 200 metres butterfly to go at this weekend.
