RUGBY PREVIEW: Horden v Percy Park

NEW Year, new start.

That is the hope of Horden head coach Glenn Bowman as the North One East basement side start 2015 with the daunting task of a home match against promotion-chasing Percy Park (kick-off 2.15pm).

A massive gap of 51 points separates the North East neighbours – Park have lost only three times and boast the best defensive record – and while it’s a huge test, Bowman simply wants to see his team come out and give it everything.

Horden are currently on minus four points after a five-point deduction after failing to fulfil their last fixture of 2014 at Pocklington.

So Bowman wants to see heart and passion from his players at Welfare Park tomorrow and then every Saturday.

“It’s a complete cliche but I’m hoping it’s going to be a case of a fresh start in the New Year,” he told SportMail.

“We finished 2014 in an awful position – not fielding a team and being deducted points.

“It really hurt a lot of people in the club.

“We need to get some pride back and the only way we’re going to do that is by performances on the pitch.

“January will be a tough month with the fixtures we’ve got, but it’s been like that all season, so what’s new?

“There are good players in this squad but some of them need to work harder and bring more to the table for the team. Reputations count for nothing if you’re not delivering.”

Horden have shown glimpses of promise, especially in their last home game when they were in contention for a long spell against Northern before losing 34-15.

“We’ve been close in games for 60 minutes this season but then faded in the last 20,” said Bowman.

“If we can work hard and stay organised for the full 80 in every game we’ve got left then I’m sure we can pick up points.

“The players’ belief and pride has been dented, you can understand that, but they have to keep believing.

“We can be better than we’ve shown but we have to go out do it, it’s down to us – no-one else.”

Experienced forward Michael Thompson returns from injury and will feature somewhere in the front row.
