Skipper backs Rovers to carry on run

MICHAEL Thubron misses his first match as skipper tomorrow – but is backing Hartlepool Rovers to make it five wins in a row in his absence.

Thubron is at a friend’s wedding while Rovers take on Gosforth at the Friarage in Durham Northumberland One (kick-off 3pm).

After losing the opening fixture – at current league leaders Alnwick – Rovers have registered four victories on the bouncce, picking up a bonus point on each Saturday.

Last week’s 39-22 success at Horden – they led 31-3 up the hill at half-time – has been their best yet as they finally laid a marker that coach Alan Brown and assistant Michael Ainslie had been looking for.

And Thubron says the side must keep their foot on the accelerator after putting such an impressive game together at Welfare Park.

“We’ve got to keep it going,” said the giant second row.

“The lads really raised their game last week and it was a tremendous win.

“But we can’t afford to relax, we have to maintain that same level.

“We’ve got to be looking to play well every game. I’m not there tomorrow but I’m confident the lads can carry on where they left off.”
