TONY Eccles won’t be short on motivation when he takes to the Lakeside oche.

The Viper is back at the BDO World Darts Championships for the eighth time and looking to better his quarter-final appearance in 2007.

Not only is he desperate for a long run, he wants to get one over first round opponent Darryl Fitton during their Monday afternoon battle.

Eccles who leads the head-to-head between the pair, 3-2, says he will be driven on by a heated exchange between the pair last year which has turned this into “a grudge match”

The 43-year-old said: “Last year he turned around to me after I’d lost in the last 32 to Geert de Vos and said to my face ‘I’m glad you lost that’.

“I asked why and he said ‘you threw that bull away, you wanted to lose’.

“It was none of his business.

“There’s revenge at stake.”

Fitton is ranked fifth seed but with the West View thrower retiring after the tournament, you can expect the former PDC ace to do everything he can to make a mockery of the seedings.

He certainly doesn’t fear his opponent.

“It is a tough draw but he has it tough as well,” Eccles insisted.

“I know what he is capable of but he knows what I can do too.

“I’ve beaten him a few times, including on TV.

“I’m going into the game with no negatives.”
